Mrs. Nkechi Evelyn Weke is a dynamic woman. She is a highly accomplished nurse who rose to become Assistant Director,Nursing Services at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. She is also a strong advocate of women development and empowerment, who in the year 2012, became President of the National Council of Women Societies .
Born on June 13, 1954, she hails from Rumuokparali in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. She attended All Saints Primary School, Yaba, Lagos from 1960 to 1963 and Holy Trinity Primary School, Sabon -Gari, Kano from 1964 to 1966. In 1966, she enrolled at Isiokpo Girls Secondary School, Port Harcourt where she spent only a year. Between 1970 and 1972, she was at Government Secondary School, Port Harcourt.
She enrolled at the School of Nursing, Port Harcourt in 1974. She left the institution in 1978 as a Registered Nurse (RN). She attended the School of Midwifery between 1980 and 1981. She became a Registered Midwife in 1981. Her quest for more knowledge led her to the University of Port Harcourt. She was at the institution from 1990 to 1996 when she was awarded a B.Sc in Public Administration. She earned a Diploma in Nursing Administration and Management from the University of Benin in 2000. She also has an M.Sc in Public Administration.
She was employed by the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital in 1983 as Nursing Officer II. She was promoted to Nursing Officer I in 1987. In 1990, she rose to the position of Senior Nursing Officer. She became Principal Nursing Officer in 1993. In 1997, she was promoted Assistant Chief Nursing Officer. She rose to the position of Chief Nursing Officer in 2000. She attained the position of Assistant Director, Nursing Services in 2004.
Mrs Weke is a member of various professional bodies. She is a member of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. She is a member of the Institute of Public Administration, University of Benin. She is a Registered Nurse Administrator,a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management and a member of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives.
She belongs to many socio-cultural organizations as well. She served two terms as Secretary of the National Council of Women Societies in Obio/Akpor L.G.A.( from 1996 to 1998 and from 1998 to 2000.) She was the Public Relations Officer, Nwereoma Social Club of Rumuokparali from 1986 to 1987. She was the Treasurer of Akpo Women Progressive Association from 1996 to 2000. Since 2004, she has been a member of the Central Working Committee of Ikwerre Women Forum (IWF), Rivers State. She is Secretary, Mothers of Niger Delta (MONDE), Obio/Akpor L.G.A. She is also a member of Nwerekanma Ladies Association (NLA).
At the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, she has functioned in a lot of capacities like being member, Drug Revolving Fund (DRF), UPTH, member, Hospital Management Committee (HMC), UPTH and member, Appointment and Promotion Committee (APC) II, UPTH.
She is a recipient of the Award of Excellence from Akpor Youth Elite Forum.She was conferred with the PSR Woman of Merit Gold Award in 2016. She is married with six chi
