Mrs. Hannatu Kachollom Haruna acquired something close to celebrity status over ten years ago when she became the First Lady or Wife of the Executive Chairman of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.She made huge impact with her economic empowerment programmes for women.She was at the very fore of the advocacy for girl child education. She lent financial support to several indigent women and children and rehabilitated many orphans and widows.
.Yet, apart from being the amiable wife of Hon. James Dung Haruna, she was already a woman of substance in her own right. She was a Principal Catering Officer at the National Veterinary Research Institute, Vom, She was Chairman of Amsun Dungan Chemicals,a company which was into the production of perfumed liquid detergents,germicides and air deodorants.She also ran a modern bakery and tended a vegetable farm and poultry.
Hannatu was born on May 2, 1954 at Du in Jos South Local Government Area . She attended Local Education Authority School , Gyel, Plateau State and Community Secondary School, Zawan,also in Plateau State. She holds the Ordinary National Diploma in Catering and Hotel Management of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. She obtained her Higher National Diploma in Catering and Hotel Management from the Akperan Orshi College of Agriculture, Yandev, Benue State (1993).
She was employed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Jos in 1976 and rose to the rank of Senior Home Economics Extension Officer in 1994. She joined the National Veterinary Research Institute later in the same year.
Mrs. Haruna has participated in several conferences and seminars across Nigeria. She is an active member of the Wives in Association of Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (WALGON). She participated in the Finals of the 9th Maggi National Cooking Competition which held on August 18, 1990 at the Eko Le Meridien Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Hannatu is an active member of the Church of Christ in Nigeria (COCIN). She is a member of the Women’s Fellowship and the Officer-in-Charge of the Girls Brigade of the Bukuru, Jos branch of the church.
It was in acknowledgement of her contribution to national development in the field of Catering that Mrs. Hannatu Kachollom Haruna was conferred with the PSR Woman of Merit Gold Award in 2006.
Her marriage to Hon. James Haruna is blessed with six children. Her hobbies include cooking, reading and helping the underprivileged in the society.
